Cutting the Squares for the Centre

one From the six coordinating print fabrics, cut one 21⁄2in (6.4cm) wide strip × width of fabric. Cross cut six 21⁄2in (6.4in) squares from each fabric. Cut twelve 11⁄2in × 31⁄2in (3.8cm × 8.9cm) strips from the remainder of each fabric. From the yarn dye fabric, cut two 93⁄8in (24cm) squares. Using a suitable fabric marking pen, draw a diagonal line across these squares and cut to make four corner triangles (Fig 1).

Working the Appliqué

two Using the templates provided and your favourite method of appliqué (see General Techniques:Appliqué Methods), apply the hens to the large corner triangles. If using needle-turn appliqué (as I did) you will need to add seam allowances to the shapes. I made paper templates for the appliqué shapes, drew around the templates onto the wrong side of my chosen fabrics, added a small seam allowance and cut the pieces out. Turn the seam allowance under all round.

three Stitch the appliqué shapes in position using a blind hem stitch and thread that matches the background fabric so it doesn’t show. Press the finished appliqués on the wrong side and then on the right side.
